QUALANOD

Working on quality since 1973

In 1973 the former Spanish Association of Anodizers (ASESAN) participated in the creation of the QUALANOD Quality Label, thanks to the agreement between the European Aluminium Association (EAA) and the European Association of Anodizers (EURAS) for the constitution of the "Association for quality controls in the anodizing industry" (QUALANOD INTERNATIONAL).

On 2 January 2013 a contract was signed granting QUALANOD the General Licence in Spain to the Spanish Association of Aluminium and Surface Treatments (AEA).

QUALANOD is in charge of granting the Quality Label, through licences to each of the countries. It also updates the provisions contained in the ""Guidelines"" of the Label, which are based on ISO Standards.

Officially recognised quality label

Since 2014 we have had official recognition of the Label through registration in the General Register of the Technical Building Code (CTE) of the Ministry of Housing (MVIV), as a Quality Seal for materials used in Building, with the reference CTE-DC/QLD. This Register was produced for the first time by Ministerial Order VIV/1744/2008 of 9 June.

This register is renewed every 2 years.

2014 marked the 40th anniversary of the QUALANOD Label.

QUALICOAT

QUALICOAT is a quality label that was created in 1986 with the aim of maintaining and promoting the quality of aluminium coating according to established Technical Specifications; all the requirements of these Specifications must be complied with in order to obtain and maintain the Label.

In this respect, a coating plant bearing the Label shall operate its entire production according to the QUALICOAT Specifications and shall use for this production only coating materials and chemical conversion materials approved by QUALICOAT.

To ensure that the standards described in the Specifications are met, the accredited laboratory DECOTEC annually carries out several inspections of the labels licensee coating plants and tests the materials produced by each company, both with regard to the coaters and to the paint and chemical manufacturers.

Within QUALICOAT there is:

two special certifications:
SEASIDE: for QUALICOAT coaters in marine environments.
QUALICOAT 3.0: for extrusion, whose technical specifications are also listed in Appendix 13 to those of QUALICOAT.

QUALIDECO

QUALIDECO QUALIDECO is a QUALICOAT label that deals with the maintenance of quality in decorative finishes of lacquered aluminium such as the wood effect.

To achieve these finishes, and after a previous pre-treatment of the aluminium, two main techniques are used:

  • Powder on powder: two layers of powder paint are applied.
  • Sublimation: a film paper is adhered to a piece painted with powder paint.

QUALIDECO is governed by a Technical Specification which aims to establish the minimum requirements to be met by decoration plants, materials and decorated products and to ensure continuous quality control of the products so that decorators and - in the case of sublimation technology - suppliers of powder and film can hold a QUALIDECO licence for outdoor applications in architecture.

To ensure that the standards described in the Specifications are met, the accredited DECOTEC laboratory carries out several inspections of the labels licensee coating plants every year and tests the materials produced by each company, both with regard to the coaters and the paint, film and chemical manufacturers.

SEASIDE

According to point 3.2 of the QUALICOAT Label Specifications in force, to prepare the Aluminium for its subsequent coating:

The surfaces of the parts to be treated must be clean and free from any kind of oxidation, flaking or dust, grease, lubricants, hand marks or any kind of contamination that may impair the final finish. The parts must be treated before the conversion coating. Two preliminary pre-treatments are defined: standard (mandatory) and extended (voluntary, for SEASIDE qualification).

The SEASIDE Class is a QUALICOAT certification which consists of carrying out a pretreatment which, according to point 3.2.1. of the current Specifications, consists of a total attack rate of at least 2.0 g/m2 superscript, and a degreasing, either in a separate step or in a combined degreasing/attack step.

A degreasing, either in a separate step or in a combined degreasing/attack step.

Type A: acid attack
  • Type A1: simple acid attack
  • Type A2: acid attack + acid attack
Type AA: dual attack
  • Type AA1: alkaline attack* and one acid attack*
  • Type AA2: acid attack + alkaline attack* + acid attack*
Anodic pre-treatment (automatic SEASIDE classification)

It consists of an anodic coating with a thickness of at least 3 μm (not exceeding 8 μm), free of dust and free of surface defects.

It shall be executed in accordance with the parameters specified in point 3.4 of the current Specifications.

QUALISTEELCOAT

The QUALISTEELCOAT Label is a European Quality Label created in 2007. It concerns the coating of raw or zinc coated steel with liquid or powder paints. It is the equivalent of the QUALICOAT Label (for Aluminium) with the same management and the same Quality concept.

The technical specifications of the label are based on the corrosivity categories specified in the ISO 12944-2 standard. QUALISTEELCOAT licences are divided into two main groups:

  •     Indoor: Categories C-1 and C-2 indoor.
  •     Outdoor: Categories C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4 and C-5 outdoor.

It is the equivalent of the QUALICOAT Label (for Aluminium) with the same management and the same Quality concept.

How to obtain a QUALISTEELCOAT licence

In order to obtain a QUALISTEELCOAT licence, it is necessary for the applicant company to set a series of parameters, such as:

  • Corrosivity category to be obtained.
  • Coating system used for the requested corrosivity category.
  • To have a laboratory to carry out all the prescribed tests.
  • Work with materials (paint and conversion material) approved by QUALISTEELCOAT.
  • To carry out the corresponding self-control.
  • Successfully pass an inspection by QUALISTEELCOAT inspectors.
Inspection for licensing
  • Inspection of stored products and facilities.
  • Checking that the laboratory equipment is in order and working properly.
  • Inspection of the production process.
  • Checking the quality of the finished product.

Some of the prescribed tests are: thickness, gloss, adhesion, impact, boiling water, resistance to neutral salt spray.

Once the licence has been obtained

The applicator is obliged to have a quality self-monitoring system in his production unit.

Some of the tests that a QUALISTEELCOAT coater must carry out for self-monitoring:

  • Scratch resistance
  • Surface hardness
  • Thickness
  • Adhesion
  • Impact resistance
  • Gloss difference

The inspection body shall visit the plant, without prior notice, twice a year and carry out the relevant tests.
